Eliason Wins AGAIN!

Cory Eliason’s dominance in Speedway Australia Sprintcar Speedweek continued at Bunbury Speedway on Saturday night, when he won his fourth feature race in six appearances in Western Australia since Boxing Day.

His latest victory, on an elbows-up Bunbury track, saw him win from local stars David Priolo and Trent Pigdon.

Eliason started the night in the Diamond Bay Motorsport 26 in the best possible fashion, setting the quickest time in his qualifying group.

This saw him start from p4 in his heat race where he finished third, and then he started and finished third in the A Dash, giving him the front row start, where he opted to start on the inside line.

Priolo originally started from p14 in the final, but when the field reformed for a full restart without a full lap completed, he had moved up two rows to start from p10, setting up the strong result.

After being fifth quickest in the same qualifying group as Eliason, he then started p5 in his heat and finished sixth.

This was Priolo’s best result of the season so far, bettering a third he posted in the second round of the season in early November.

Pigdon originally started from p8 but because of a full restart early on, he ultimately started from p4 and his third was also his best result of the season so far, beating his previous best result of a fifth, which he posted in round one, back on October 22.

He was quickest in the second qualifying group and in his heat race he finished fifth after starting from p3.

Pigdon then started fifth and finished fourth in the B Dash.

The feature race had only just begun when the caution lights came on as 2022-23 Maddington Toyota Sprintcar Series leader James Inglis, who started on the front row with Eliason, spun coming out of pits bend which then involved American Tyler Courtney and local star Brad Maiolo.

They all headed to the work area, along with Jason Kendrick who just clipped the parked cars and had to change a right rear tyre.

All four drivers then rejoined at the back of the field for the full restart that saw Andrew Priolo (who originally started from p6) move up to start from p2, with Pigdon also improving by two rows.

Ryan Lancaster then spun on the next start and rejoined the action at the rear of the field as the four cars that went to the work area previously, all headed back again for more hasty repairs.

This time away Eliason led away from the third American in the field in Brock Zearfoss and Andrew Priolo.

The leader was into lapped traffic with seven laps in the book and a few laps later defending Maddington Toyota Sprintcar Series champion Callum Williamson’s night came to a crashing end in turn two.

Not long afterwards Lancaster spun again and was sent to the infield after being the cause of a second stop, ending his night.

At the midway point, Inglis lost part of his top wing, which was already damaged, and as this was the second occasion he caused a restart, he was also finished for the night.

At this point officials sent all cars to the infield for a fuel stop, given the huge number of rolling laps completed and it was heartbreak for Zearfoss who had to change a right rear tyre when in second place, sending him to the rear of the field for the next restart,

Not long after the racing action resumed, Daniel Harding, who was doing double duties, also racing a speedcar, slid to the infield, ending his night.

With 10 laps to go David Priolo was in second and Pigdon third and that was how they ran to the checkers.

Kris Coyle was fourth after starting from p7, looking very racy in the Merger Motorsport 79.

He finished just ahead of Kendrick who raced through the field for fifth after resuming the battle from p17, moving up 12 spots to win the Kincrome Hard Charger award.

Sixth was WA champion Dayne Kingshott who originally started from p13, crossing ahead of Mitchell Wormall in seventh (from p16), Courtney who started up to eighth from p15, Zearfoss who took ninth after dropping back to 14th and Andrew Priolo who rounded out the top 10.

Jason Pryde started and finished 11th, while Brad Maiolo started and finished 12th, Jaydee Dack started 17th and finished 13th and Todd Davis finished 14th after starting from p18.

At the start of the night Zearfoss claimed the Victory 1 Performance Quick Time, while Lancaster, Maiolo and Inglis were the three heat winners.

Russell Taylor packed up early after flipping the W65 in his heat race early on.

Eliason has increased his lead over Courtney in the Speedweek points battle as the seventh and final night is held at the Perth Motorplex next Saturday night.

Williamson, Kendrick and Inglis round out the top five.

In the Maddington Toyota Sprintcar Series after 10 of 18 rounds, James Inglis has seen a lot of his points buffer disappear.

Heading into the Bunbury round he was 28 points ahead of Kendrick and as we head into round 11 next Saturday night, that margin is just six points.
