This weekend the Wingless Sprints will head down the highway to the Bunbury Speedway for the second time this season, with fifteen cars set to fight it out for the win in the Des Nash Memorial event!
The event, created to honour ’The Outlaw’ Des Nash, started in the 2015/16 season and has been going ever since, being held at a number of venues across WA.
Des was a speedway stalwart whose legacy still holds strong within Australian Wingless Sprint Racing today. He was one of the founding members of the AWSR, becoming Vice President in its second year, a position he held until his passing. He was also a former State Technical Representative.
Nash’s commitment and dedication to Wingless Sprints played a huge part in the betterment of the class over the years, not only through his work behind the scenes, but also by helping to introduce fellow racers to the class and offering his assistance wherever needed, which is why this weekend’s event has been named after him once again.
This year will mark the eighth time the Des Nash Memorial has been held, with Tom Payet still the winningest driver having claimed the event three times.
Matt Iwanow grabbed his first win in the 2017/18 season, then backed it up with a second last year when the Des Nash Memorial was combined with the WA Title at Bunbury, where he claimed the win ahead of Blake Iwanow and Daran Humfrey.
Victorian Luke Weel also has a win to his name, as does Blake Iwanow who walked away as the victor after the two night event at the Motorplex in the 2020/21 season defeating Daniel Keen and Matty Fellowes.
Of these aforementioned winning drivers, none of them are in this weekend’s field, though last year’s third place getter Daran Humfrey is certainly nominated and would love to grab his first win in the prestigious event.
Last time the Wingless Sprints raced at Bunbury, Humfrey was also on the podium, finishing behind Jye McKenzie (who is also in the field this weekend), so these two alone should put on a great show as they battle it out.
The grandsons of Des, Bailey and Cody Nash, have both nominated to compete in honour of the family and although both are relatively new to the racing scene, have certainly been setting the track alight with their fast pace and hard charging driving styles, both well within a chance of claiming the win.
Tom Britton had some strong results last time he raced, as did Blake Scarey and last start winner Cameron McKenzie (who won the Collie feature race a few weeks ago), so all three added to the field amongst a heap of other good names mean the feature race should be a cracker.
With $1000 to win, plus the honour of winning the prestigious Des Nash Memorial on the line, teams will be throwing everything at this event as they hunt for victory!
