In what turned out to be a very emotional feature race at the Bunbury Speedway, the Grandsons of Des Nash, Cody and Bailey, went one and two in the twenty lap Des Nash Outlaw feature race in his honour!
Both Bailey and Cody would win a heat race en route to the final, with Cody doing enough to start from pole alongside Cameron McKenzie, while row two would also be a Nash/McKenzie combination, Jye starting inside Bailey.
After the missing man formation in Des’s honour was completed, the race went green and Cody would grab the initial lead, going high through turns one and two which allowed Jye McKenzie a sniff underneath. Cody however would hold strong, Jye dropping back in line behind him while Cameron McKenzie settled into third.
Cameron would go outside of Jye and grab second with two laps complete as Zayne Martin chased hard in fourth, but shortly after Jye would retake third with three laps complete.
Justin Wragg and Daran Humfrey came together down the back straight to bring out the cautions, with Humfrey mounting the right rear of Wragg, the duo coming to a stop with three complete and being sent rear for the restart.
Cody Nash would lead away with Jye and Cameron right behind him, but only one more lap would be complete before Tom Britton spun in front of the field and was lucky to not be hit in turn three, seeing him also go to the rear with sixteen laps remaining.
The next attempt at a restart barely got underway as the yellows came out once again for a spinning Jordan Johnson coming out of turn two, while the following attempt would see just one lap completed before the yellows came out for a stranded Lachlan Hortin in turn four, but it was just enough for Cameron to get by Jye for second.
Cody Nash again got away at the restart, with Cameron and Jye fighting hard with each other but dropping back from Nash as they did so.
Just as the race was about to complete the tenth lap Jye McKenzie washed out wide out of turn four and skidded to a stop, bringing out the yellows with nine complete, his race over.
Cody led away Cameron and the impressive Zayne Martin on the next restart, but Bailey Nash quickly made his way into third as ahead Cameron McKenzie bicycled coming out of turn four but was able to save it.
With six to go Bailey had snuck up on McKenzie, then dove under McKenzie to grab second place through turn two, with McKenzie fighting back to retake the position. Bailey however didn’t give up, moving around the outside to be second with five laps to go.
From here the two Nash boys began to pull away, and no one was going to take this Nash quinella away from them, with McKenzie being forced to settle for second.
It was a great display of racing tonight at Bunbury Speedway, fitting of honouring the man known as ‘The Outlaw’!
